More about saddles
At the beginning, it makes sense to do shorter but more frequent rides.
Sitting position and riding time are decisive factors when cycling. The distance between the sit bones, which is different for men and women, is also important. Therefore, men usually need narrower saddles, while women can benefit from a wider saddle.
Pressure on the sit bones is often the cause of pain in the buttocks area when cycling, especially on longer rides. A saddle that is too narrow or too soft can increase this pressure and lead to pain in the perineal area. Inadequate acclimatization to cycling can also lead to pain in the sit bones.
If you experience pain when riding on a bicycle saddle, it is important to know whether you are a pubic bone or ischial bone user in order to choose the most suitable saddle type.
In general, a wide and soft saddle is best suited for short distances on a city bike, where you tend to sit upright. For longer tours on a racing or trekking bike, however, it is advisable to use a narrower and harder saddle. A saddle that is too soft is deformed by body heat and does not offer enough support on longer tours. This can lead to saddle pressure and excessive strain on the nerves. A narrower saddle is the better choice if you sit bent forward more on the bike. An additional cut-out in the saddle can also help to prevent perspiration and irritation on longer tours.
The saddle height makes a significant contribution to riding comfort. If it is set too low, it can cause your feet to fall asleep, while a saddle position that is too far back reduces pedaling power and can quickly lead to fatigue. The seat angle also has an influence on seating comfort.
